fashion/music/lifestyle.

as some of you might have noticed, i almost always close my entries with a little bit of music. i always listen to music when i write my blog. i almost always listen to music when i get dressed.

are people's individual styles influenced by the music they listen to on a daily basis? a weekly basis? or ever?

when i chose my outfit for today, i had nineties hip hop in mind. i actually woke up with the notorious b.i.g.'s hypnotize playing on repeat in my head, and i knew my day was going to be filled with high-waisted things, beanies, my trusty sneakers, and, you know... bling. i opted out of any acid washed denim jackets, bedazzled back pockets, and other mall attire in favor of a more sophisticated look, nodding towards biggie's flashy ways with a pendant and gold tank. i streamlined everything with two-tone tights, and an outfit was born.

this happens all the time, and i think that's a reason why my personal style changes between days. if i listen to some punk, i might throw on some creepers, and if it's ska, they'll probably be black and white. if i listen to dark electro, i might choose black milk leggings and a loose tank with deep armholes, something suitable for hula hooping. if i listen to cutesy indie music with harmonicas and ukeleles and some lilting girlish vocals, i'm probably going to dress like i came out of a pastel unicorn rainbow cloud... with a couple of studs and spikes, of course, because i am who i am.

or i might just throw all of that out the window because i don't follow my own silly fashion rules. but mainly, i get a lot of influence from music. does everyone else get dressed with music? music plays in stores, at fashion shows, and people get dressed up for music.

so what's the deal, everyone? how does music play a part in your fashion life?

till next time,

metal, baby.

and so begins the first full day of being in the dorms of my san franciscan school. things are mostly unpacked, i have odds and ends to buy, and i'm trying to figure out what angles i can use with my tripod to best record and display outfits and such. my roommate is cute as a button, and we get along just fine, which helps so much, especially as today is a rough day for me. it's been four years since i lost my best friend to a car accident, and i'm just coping and keeping busy for now. i used to get really depressed on days like this one, but a close friend gave me a letter before i left the midwest that ended with a quote by buddha-- "you, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection."

... i've been spending my time taking pictures and listening to quiet music.

things are a bit cool here, so i usually throw on a flannel or my leather jacket in the morning or evening, but in the middle of the day, it's perfect. otherwise, i've been wearing leggings, blouses, shorts with tights, boots, long shirts, and the like. i love it.

i'm still getting used to the lighting in this room, but i love the details with the heater and the window and the blank walls and the dreamcatcher my roommate put up. pretty much everything, really. here's a little bit of the tunes i've attached myself to today.

sneaky stuff.

i love the hype that sneakers are getting lately. converse especially seem to be kicking off, with ads everywhere that seem to encourage the wearer to go off-road biking and then straight to a party, loving life all the way.

my take on the sneaker trend was of course to opt for something with height, and i was feeling inspired by my old coworker's outstanding high-tops, so i bought these deena & ozzy wedges. not so wonderful for off-road biking, but good for having a great time? i think so.

also, i'm a firm believer that leggings are not pants. jeggings are even strange, and leggings... just aren't pants. i never wear them with crop tops, though the leggings may be high-waisted. i'm pretty sure that's considered a Fashion Rule, but i'm not concerned with that-- i just think leggings as pants look bizarre. notwithstanding, i wore these lovely leggings with a blouse that wasn't terribly oversized this evening, and i have no regrets. no weird wardrobe malfunctions were had. i've decided it's because the print is just so well-placed that these guys pass as bottoms on their own, and i'm completely all right with the result.

oh, and that wristband in the first picture? i went to lollapalooza, and it was a grand old time, and there was a lot of rain and mud and good music. i especially enjoyed the givers and, of course, the red hot chili peppers. i really wish i could have been there tonight to see justice, but i'll just have to wait to see if they come to the music scene in california sometime soon!

much love.
